Why Manifestation Doesn’t Work (And What Actually Does)

You’ve visualized your revenue goals. You’ve created vision boards. You’ve affirmed your success every morning. And yet, the breakthrough you’re working toward keeps slipping just out of reach. The problem might not be your technique. The problem might be that you’re trying to manifest from a state of desperation rather than alignment.

Most manifestation advice treats desire like placing an order with the universe. Think positive thoughts, feel good feelings, and wait for delivery. But this approach misses the most critical element: the energetic state you’re operating from when you set your intention. If you’re trying to manifest from fear, need, or scarcity, you’re actually programming failure into your process.

Coming up, you’ll learn why traditional manifestation fails, what expansion and contraction energy states really mean for your results, and the three-part formula that creates reliable outcomes when you want to achieve something that feels impossible right now.

The Spiritual Bypassing Trap

Here’s what the manifestation industry gets wrong. It tells you to avoid the hard stuff. Skip the uncomfortable emotions. Just stay positive, visualize success, and meditate on butterflies and abundance. If you’re struggling, you’re simply not vibrating high enough.

This is spiritual bypassing, and it’s why so many ambitious business owners feel frustrated with manifestation work. You’re being told to paint over a cracked foundation and pretend the building is solid.

Victoria Song, former venture capitalist turned coach and author of Bending Reality: How to Make the Impossible Probable, calls this out directly:

There’s this idea, like, I’m just going to sit back and be happy and meditate and think about butterflies and by visualizing this positivity, my vision, it will just happen. I think that can be very misleading because I don’t think that’s how it works. That’s why I say manifestation doesn’t work.

Her clients include founders who have sold companies for billions, created breakthrough innovations, and achieved outcomes that seemed impossible. The difference? They didn’t skip the emotional work. They went into the center of it.

You can’t manifest your way around fear, doubt, or unworthiness. You have to process those energies first. Only then can you create from a place of genuine alignment.

Understanding Expansion vs. Contraction

Every action you take in your business comes from one of two energetic states. Learning to distinguish between them changes everything about your results.

  • Contraction is the energy of fear and need. It feels urgent, tight, grasping. You’re thinking “I need this to work or else.” There’s a sense of scarcity underneath. You’re operating from survival mode, trying to control outcomes because you’re terrified of what happens if you fail.
  • Expansion is the energy of possibility and trust. It feels open, relaxed, confident. You’re thinking “I’m excited to see how this unfolds.” There’s a sense of abundance underneath. You’re operating from growth mode, taking aligned action because you trust yourself to handle whatever comes.

When you’re in contraction, you make decisions from desperation. You chase opportunities that feel off. You compromise your values because you think you have to. You work harder but get worse results because your energy is communicating “I don’t believe this will work.”

When you’re in expansion, you make decisions from clarity. You attract the right opportunities. You hold your boundaries because you trust more will come. You work strategically and get better results because your energy is communicating “I’m already successful.”

Victoria explains it clearly:

Anything that we are operating from a place of contraction on is going to actually change the odds out of our favor. We really limit our chance of success when we’re coming from contraction. One of the key things that I believe allows us to change the odds is to make sure you’re doing so from a place of expansion. From that clear, calm, relaxed, expansive, grounded place of gratitude and excitement, can you then feel into the vision.

Think about a time you landed a major client or closed a significant deal. Were you desperate for it, or were you confident? Chances are, the outcomes you’re most proud of happened when you were operating from expansion.

The Three-Part Alignment Formula

Manifestation is not magic. It’s alignment. When your thoughts, feelings, and actions are all pointing in the same direction, results become inevitable. When they’re contradicting each other, you create internal resistance that blocks what you want.

Here’s the formula that actually works.

1. Align Your Thoughts

Your thoughts need to support the reality you’re creating. This goes deeper than positive thinking. You’re not trying to convince yourself everything is great when it’s not. You’re identifying and shifting the beliefs that contradict what you want.

If you want to scale to $10 million but you believe “growth requires suffering” or “success means losing myself,” those thoughts will sabotage you. You’ll unconsciously create obstacles that prove your belief right.

Ask yourself: what are all the thoughts that support this vision coming true? What would someone who already has what I want be thinking?

The answer might surprise you. Someone who already runs a $10 million company is not thinking “I hope this works.” They’re thinking “I’m building something remarkable” or “I’m solving an important problem.” The certainty is already there.

2. Align Your Feelings

Your emotions are your frequency. They’re what you’re broadcasting to everyone you interact with and every decision you make. If your feelings don’t match your vision, you’re creating resistance.

You can’t feel desperate and attract abundance. You can’t feel inadequate and attract recognition. You can’t feel terrified and make bold moves.

The key is to feel the emotions of already having what you want. Not as a performance or fake-it-till-you-make-it exercise. As a genuine embodiment practice.

If you want financial freedom, what does that feel like in your body? Peace? Relief? Excitement? Start cultivating those feelings now. Not because you’re pretending, but because those emotions are available to you in this moment if you choose them.

Victoria describes the process:

More importantly, than just feeling into the vision that you have is understanding what are the thoughts, feelings and actions that align with that vision. The formula for manifestation is getting my thoughts, feelings and actions aligned. I need to systematically go through and ask myself, what are all the thoughts that support this vision coming true? What are the emotions that support this vision coming true? And then what are the actions I can see from this thought and feeling place that I can take to align with this vision?

Many business owners skip this step. They focus on strategy and tactics but ignore the emotional frequency they’re operating from. Then they wonder why execution feels so hard.

3. Align Your Actions

This is where manifestation stops being theory and starts producing results. Your actions need to match the person who already has what you want.

If you want to be a recognized thought leader in your industry, what would that person do? They’d probably share their insights publicly. They’d pitch themselves for speaking opportunities. They’d write that article they’ve been putting off.

If you want to double your revenue, what would a CEO running a company twice your size do? They’d probably delegate more. They’d focus on strategic relationships. They’d stop doing $50/hour tasks when their time is worth $500/hour.

The actions you’re willing to take from a place of courage, confidence, and belief look completely different from the actions you take when you’re playing small or playing it safe.

One of Victoria’s insights cuts through the noise:

I mean, I don’t know how you can make anything happen if you don’t take any action on it. The actions that we’re able to take from a place of courage, confidence, gratitude, excitement, believing in ourselves, all of that, they look bolder, they’re bigger actions than we’re willing to take when we’re playing small, when we’re playing not to lose, when we’re afraid of looking silly.

Most people say they want something but their actions reveal they’re not ready. They’re waiting for certainty. They’re avoiding risk. They’re protecting themselves from potential failure or judgment.

The universe responds to what you do, not what you say you want.

Why You’re Creating the Opposite of What You Want

Here’s the uncomfortable truth about manifestation. You’re always manifesting. The question is whether you’re doing it consciously or unconsciously.

When you focus on what you don’t want, you’re feeding that reality with your attention and energy. When you worry about running out of money, you make decisions from scarcity. When you obsess over what might go wrong, you prime your brain to look for problems.

Your perceptions become self-fulfilling. You see evidence that confirms your fears. You miss opportunities because you’re not in the right state to recognize them.

Victoria sees this pattern constantly:

If we do it unconsciously, we often bend it in a direction that we don’t want in an unfavorable way because it’s often rooted in fear. What if this happens? What if that happens? And before you know it, our perceptions and our fears become self-fulfilling.

This is why positive thinking alone doesn’t work. If you’re affirming “I am abundant” while your body is flooded with stress hormones and your actions are driven by panic, you’re not aligned. You’re in conflict with yourself.

The solution is not to suppress your fears. It’s to process them so they stop running your decisions in the background.

The Worthiness Foundation

Before you can manifest anything significant, you need to examine what you believe about deserving. This is foundational work that most people skip, and it’s why their results plateau.

Do you believe you’re allowed to have what you want? Or do you think you need to earn it through struggle and sacrifice?

Many high-achieving business owners were taught that success requires suffering. That ease means you’re not working hard enough. That if you’re not grinding, you don’t deserve the reward.

These beliefs create an invisible ceiling. You’ll work incredibly hard and get results up to a certain point. Then you’ll hit a wall. Not because of market conditions or competition, but because you don’t believe you deserve to receive more without suffering more.

Victoria’s most transformational breakthrough was around worthiness:

Perhaps the one that ripples out into every other one is just ultimately my sense of worthiness and deservingness of my dreams, of being, doing, having what I want.

She realized she had been unconsciously believing she needed to suffer to earn good things. Once she shifted that belief, everything else became easier.

Ask yourself: if you achieved your biggest goal tomorrow without any more struggle, would you feel like you deserved it? Or would you feel guilty, like you got away with something?

Your answer reveals whether worthiness is a barrier for you.

How to Check Your Energetic State

Before you take any significant action toward a goal, pause and check which state you’re in. This simple practice will save you months of wasted effort.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Am I thinking “I want this” or “I need this or else”?
  2. Does this feel exciting or urgent?
  3. Am I taking this action from possibility or from fear?
  4. What would I do if I already had what I want?
  5. Am I attached to a specific outcome or open to something even better?

If you notice contraction, stop. Don’t take action from that state. You’ll just create more problems and burn yourself out in the process.

Instead, use the emotion processing techniques to shift your state first. Breathe. Move. Release the tightness. Get back to center.

Then revisit the action from expansion. It might look completely different. You might realize you don’t need to do it at all. Or you might see a better path forward that wasn’t visible when you were in survival mode.

What Alignment Actually Looks Like in Business

I worked with a founder who wanted to raise a Series A round. He spent months perfecting his pitch deck, rehearsing his presentation, and networking with investors. But every conversation felt forced. He kept getting rejections or lukewarm interest.

When we looked underneath the strategy, we found contraction. He was thinking “I need this money or we’ll fail.” He was feeling desperate. His actions were rushed and reactive.

We shifted the work. Instead of focusing on raising capital, we focused on building a business that investors would want to fund. He stopped chasing and started creating. He focused on product development, customer success, and team building.

Within three months, investors started reaching out to him. He closed his round at a higher valuation than he had originally targeted. The difference? He was operating from expansion, not contraction.

Another client wanted to land enterprise clients but kept attracting small customers. She was visualizing big deals and affirming her value. But her actions were timid. She was underpricing. She was over-delivering to prove herself. She was saying yes to anyone who showed interest.

We identified the misalignment. Her thoughts said “I’m valuable.” Her feelings said “I’m not sure they’ll pay that much.” Her actions said “I’ll take whatever I can get.”

Once she aligned all three, everything shifted. She raised her prices, refined her positioning, and started saying no to opportunities that didn’t fit. Within 60 days, she signed two enterprise contracts that each paid more than her entire previous year’s revenue.

That’s what alignment creates. Not magic. Strategic clarity combined with confident execution.

The Timeline Question

People always ask: how long does manifestation take? The answer depends entirely on your level of alignment and how much resistance you’re carrying.

If you’re fully aligned in your thoughts, feelings, and actions, things can happen remarkably fast. Victoria’s clients have downloaded patent ideas in 24 hours and collapsed timelines that seemed to require years into months.

But if you’re holding contradictory beliefs, suppressing uncomfortable emotions, or taking action from fear, you’re creating resistance. Your timeline extends because you’re working against yourself.

The work is not to speed up manifestation. The work is to remove the blocks that are slowing it down.

What to Do When You Feel Stuck

If you’ve been working toward something and it’s not happening, the issue is usually one of three things:

  1. Misalignment. Your thoughts, feelings, or actions are contradicting what you want. Go through the three-part formula and identify where the disconnect is.
  2. Unprocessed emotion. You’re trying to manifest from contraction. Process the fear, doubt, or unworthiness that’s underneath before you take more action.
  3. Wrong goal. What you think you want might not be what you actually want or need. Get quiet and check whether this vision still excites you or if it’s something you think you should want.

Most people assume they need a better strategy. Usually, they need better alignment.

The Practice: A Weekly Alignment Check

Here’s a simple practice to keep yourself aligned as you work toward your goals.

Every Sunday, spend 15 minutes answering these questions:

  1. What is my primary goal right now?
  2. What thoughts am I having about this goal? Are they supportive or limiting?
  3. When I think about this goal, what emotions come up? Excitement or anxiety?
  4. What actions did I take this week toward this goal? Were they from expansion or contraction?
  5. What needs to shift for me to be more aligned this coming week?

This practice keeps you honest. It helps you catch misalignment early before you waste weeks or months moving in the wrong direction.

Why This Matters for Business Owners

You might be thinking: this sounds like personal development. What does it have to do with growing my company?

Everything.

Your business is a direct reflection of your internal state. If you’re operating from scarcity, you’ll create a business that struggles. If you’re operating from abundance, you’ll create a business that thrives.

The decisions you make about pricing, hiring, partnerships, product development, and growth strategy all come from either expansion or contraction. The quality of those decisions determines your trajectory.

You can have the best business model in the world. If you’re making decisions from fear, you’ll undermine your own success.

Victoria works with some of the most successful entrepreneurs and executives in the world. Her observation is consistent:

My clients have been able to collapse time, sell their companies for $4 billion, create a more effective COVID vaccine during the pandemic, download patent ideas in 24 hours, do things that seem illogical to the mind. That’s what it looks like to bend reality.

These outcomes happen when thoughts, feelings, and actions are aligned with an expansive vision. Not because the person wished for it, but because they became the energetic match for it.

Start Here

If you want to manifest something significant in your business, start by getting honest about your current energetic state.

Take one goal you’re actively working toward. Write down what you’re thinking about it, how you’re feeling about it, and what actions you’re taking toward it.

Now ask:

  • Am I aligned?
  • Are my thoughts, feelings, and actions all pointing in the same direction?
  • Or am I in conflict with myself?

If you find misalignment, that’s your work. You don’t need a new strategy. You need to process what’s underneath the contraction and shift into expansion.

From there, everything becomes clearer. The path forward reveals itself. The right actions become obvious. The timeline collapses because you’re no longer working against yourself.

If you’re ready to identify the energetic blocks keeping your business from growing and create true alignment between your vision and your actions, schedule a complimentary strategy session with one of our business coaches. We’ll help you shift from contraction to expansion so you can finally achieve what’s been just out of reach.

How do I know if I'm genuinely in expansion or just convincing myself I am?

Your body tells the truth. Expansion feels open, relaxed, and grounded even if you’re nervous about a risk. Contraction feels tight, urgent, and desperate. Check your thoughts: “I want this” signals expansion while “I need this or else” signals contraction.

Yes, but you need to process those doubts and fears first rather than suppressing them. Acknowledge the emotion, feel it in your body, and release it. Then take action from the clearer state that emerges afterward.

Check for hidden beliefs about worthiness or deservingness that might be creating resistance. Sometimes what you think you want is not actually aligned with what you need, and the universe is redirecting you toward something better.

There’s no fixed timeline. When you’re truly aligned, things can happen remarkably fast. The more resistance you’re carrying from unprocessed emotions or contradictory beliefs, the longer it takes. Focus on removing blocks, not speeding up manifestation.

Absolutely. Alignment doesn’t mean passive waiting. It means taking bold, strategic action from confidence rather than desperate, scattered action from fear. The actions from expansion are often bigger and bolder than actions from contraction.
