Entrepreneurship, or more precisely, entrepreneurs, may be attractive for many reasons, such as accountability, ambition, determination, shrewdness, and so on. And while one wouldn’t necessarily choose affluence as the main attraction, it is actually one of the biggest draws of scammers these days. Jobs in medicine, science, education, technology, and other fields are appealing, but are still far from entrepreneurship.

The rising draw of businesspeople shouldn’t be a shocker. However, it should be drawn as a lesson that this position can make one deal with a romance scam, which can markedly risk their business. Possibly the most obvious aftermath that one can think of regarding a potential affair with a romance scammer is the instance where the scammer uses their relationship to snatch away confidential data like employees’ databases with the intent of leveraging cyberextortion.

Why Romance Scams Target Entrepreneurs

According to recent studies, entrepreneurs exert a pull on 21% of women, overtaking finance and emergency response jobs, and making this a noteworthy career choice. Entrepreneurs are, by default, easy targets for scammers because they are open to communicating with other people, such as potential contractors, stakeholders, business partners, and so on. Swindlers can take advantage of this vulnerable position by pretending to be the exact representatives they’re looking for, starting dialogues under the “business talk” guise, and carefully steering the relationship toward love affairs.

Once trust is gained, the fraudster can start small, requesting decent amounts of money, or trying a big hit under the pretext of needing immediate medical treatment or asking for a loan they’re going to pay a vig, as an example. They almost always claim to live abroad and struggle for a physical encounter to occur someday, making their absence appear reasonable.

When romance scams started to pick up speed in 2020, the total losses registered across the U.K. were worth over £68MN. The number of romance fraud losses has only risen since, totaling £95MN in 2023 alone.

Romance scams remain a threatening concern, exceeding the worldwide infamous online shopping swindles in global financial losses.

How to Recognize Emotional Manipulation

It’s common for romance swindlers to resort to “love bombing” techniques, showering their targets with love and developing an emotional connection in the first stages. After the connection is solid and they can receive small favors from their victim, they one-up their game and ask for increasingly bigger efforts. Scammers often craft emotional stories to manipulate the victim into doing as told, such as facing legal charges, having a sick child, and so on.

The once-small donation can increase and transform into a hefty amount of money requested, which can lead to considerable loss and disappointment once offered. Unlike traditional business scams like phishing, loan fraud, card skimming, and so on, these hoaxes rely on emotional connection and trust.

Give Relationships Time to Develop

Taking the time to assess your bond’s development and your feelings is the safe way to go without feeling paranoid or skeptical. If you feel pressured into doing anything you don’t want by a person you’re not sure you’ll meet, or fear that you’ll be rigged, then you have all the reason to follow your intuition.

Scammers make up emergencies and push to fast-track emotional connections. Real relationships, by contrast, grow with patience and care for how you truly feel.

Limit Exposure to Your Life on Social Media

It’s very easy for the trained eye, aka the social media spy, to determine your level of wealth and social standing. If you’ve been disclosing too much on social media (like luxury watches, high-end personal cars, or expensive exotic trips) you can expect to be a “hit” for any scammer looking for their next victim.

For your peace of mind, you can try to conceal too evident hints that you’re sitting way better than others, especially if you come off as too generous. And why not keep the spicy details about spending habits to yourself – unless you’re deliberately testing someone’s intentions. However, keep personal info like IDs and credit card numbers private by all means.

How Romance Scams Occur and What to Beware of

Romance scams often begin with a seemingly innocent intention, such as a reply to an Instagram story, a Facebook message, a dating app, or even a direct text. The scammer engages in conversation and rapidly establishes an emotional bond, having the victim highly interested in them and quickly caught in the game. From funny personal stories to heartbreaking tales, they’ll share anything, talking like you’ve been best friends for years. They need to move fast so that you can’t figure out their malevolent intentions, so expect to receive over-the-top declarations of love quite early in your journey.

If this scenario sounds familiar to you and you feel like second-guessing the intentions of the person you’re talking to, there are a few ways to come closer to the truth.

When in Doubt, Talk to an Objective Friend

Friends or any other entrusted person can offer an unbiased opinion on your evolving relationship. For meaningful advice, be honest and avoid altering the story, even if staying objective is hard.

An emotional bond feels harsh to break, but it’s best to confront reality before getting too struck by powerful feelings. Sometimes, an outside view is just what you need to break free from the emotional pull of a scam.

Trust Your Gut and Examine Red Flags

If something feels off and you’re unable to find details, keep digging deeper. Conducting a quick online search with the term “scam” included can be helpful, as can performing a background check through various methods at hand. Many scammers reuse characters and plots, and others may have already posted warnings.

What to Do if You Ever Deal with Such a Situation

If you or anyone you know ever deals with a similar situation and ends up tricked into giving away vulnerable data, valuable assets, or money, you shouldn’t sit idly by. You can take the matter into your own hands and reach out to specialists in fraud recovery, who can navigate your case and guide your path. The experts work under a “No Win No Fee” rule that entails charging the client only in the event of winning the case and receiving compensation.

Report the Scammer

If you’re the unfortunate target of a scammer, you’re encouraged to report the person to stop them from creating other victims. You can report their profile on social media platforms or other apps, which might lock their account and restrict their use, compromising their image and previous conversations. Depending on your region, you may also contact the police or other experts in anti-fraud centers and see if you can gain additional info. If the scammer isn’t on the scam watchlist, this might help the authorities update their list to reduce the impact of this phenomenon.

Employees Risk Being Targets of Romance Scams, Too

Employees may not realize how valuable the information they have about your business truly is. Therefore, they might be kidding themselves into thinking that sloppily divulging important insights is without fault. You should educate your staff about these risks and prevention methods, and remind them of the information that shouldn’t be given away. Additionally, it’s best to know how to recognize the telltale behavioral traits that signal they might be in a risky situation, such as defensiveness, suspiciousness, grumpiness, and anxiety.

What to Do When These Scams Occur

You don’t want your employees to go through the pain and distress of dealing with a romance scammer. But if it happen, there are things you can do to reduce the damage, as you’ll see.

Assess the Situation to Know Where You Stand

Some of the red flags signaling that you or someone you know may be talking to a fraudster include:

  • The interlocutor asked to move the conversation to another platform, like WhatsApp, to escape platform scrutiny.
  • Medical bills or footage are an excuse to avoid video calls and conceal their identity.
  • Asking for financial help in the form of a loan or to cover urgent expenses.

Consider the Tried-And-Tested, Age-Old “Four Eyes” Tactic

The “four eyes” method has numerous different names, including the “two-person rule”. It basically entails that the individual who initiates a business money transaction isn’t the same as the one responsible for its authorization. There’s dual control, or a second set of eyes, that conducts the final stage of the transaction – the approval.

Employing this principle should impede embezzlement and is critical if you own a large company where staff work with sensitive data. It’s a popular internal control mechanism rooted in the ancient Greek method of eliminating corruption. How does it work in today’s context? Well, you’ll make sure that you double-check content before submitting, or transactions before going through with them and risking money. It’s an effortless yet effective solution to avoid errors and maintain control. Moreover, having double confirmation of your work can help reduce errors or confusion before the intended creation reaches the recipient.

Consult Investigators for Expert Scam Detection

Employees may be hesitant to disclose insights related to a potential relationship if they feel something is amiss. There’s no need to persuade them into revealing anything; instead, you can suggest they speak to an investigator who guarantees their conversations’ confidentiality. They can assess your employees’ conversations for red flags and discuss their experiences to review communications and determine the interlocutor’s position. They can also use open-source investigations and discreet inquiries to verify the authenticity of interlocutors’ stories, photographs, documents, and overall credibility.

All investigations must adhere to criminal and civil laws to protect innocent parties at all costs. You can employ or contract such a professional as part of your business’ integrity protection strategy and increase your employees’ likelihood of cooperation.

Conclusion

Do the aforementioned insights resonate with you? You may have heard about similar disheartening stories or even know someone who has dealt with such a threat. Romance scams have existed for a long time, but their occurrence rates increased during the 2020 pandemic lockdowns when individuals looking for companionship shifted to online dating websites and apps.

Remember that patience can sometimes be worrisome when combined with distance, generous promises, unreasonable excuses, and an overall “too-good-to-be-true” painting. If you use online dating apps or manage a large company that increases the likelihood of your employees doing so, keep security at the forefront of your mind and take proactive measures to mitigate or eliminate such risks.

Why are entrepreneurs more vulnerable to romance scams?

Entrepreneurs often network with many new people and maintain a strong online presence, which scammers exploit. Their perceived wealth and decision-making power also make them attractive targets.

Watch for rushed emotional connections, avoidance of video calls, vague answers about their life, and sudden financial requests. If they insist on switching platforms or avoid in-person meetings, be cautious.

A scammer may gain access to sensitive business data, impersonate stakeholders, or exploit emotional manipulation to trick you or your staff into making unauthorized payments or sharing confidential information.

Approach them with empathy, not accusation. Encourage them to speak to a fraud investigator or a trusted advisor confidentially. Offer support and reinforce the importance of protecting business information.

Yes. You can report scammers to platforms, police, or anti-fraud centers. In many cases, fraud recovery experts can help you recover lost funds, especially if action is taken quickly. Always act sooner rather than later.
